I ran into Wendy the other night at Sully's and she caught me up with the latest Duck stories. I always have fond memories of having had the chance to play with the Ducks, having been one of the many who filled the drum spot off and on from 1988-1995! You never knew what to expect at a Ducks gig! I remember my first one, I was a nobody (still am) and had landed a fill-in gig w/the famous Roadducks in the middle of BFE PA. I was excited, but nervous as hell (Bopper and Bill scared the hell outta me!). We pull up to this place off the beaten path (weren't they all?) and there were about 50 Harley's out front...I thought I was going to die, since I didn't know any of the songs, but Senator steadied me and told me not to worry..."these people couldn't even count the teeth they had left in their heads!" By the end of the night, the clientle was thanking me for fillin-in and buying me beers...what a rush, but needless to say, I was thankful to be alive...too funny!

Thanks to Jay and Bopper for the opportunities and Bill for the best sound ever...damn that kick rocked whenever you touched it! You guys were truly road warriors and I'm glad to count you as friends...I will always remember my days as a Duck drummer!

U of R, Horsefeathers, The Bitter End, etc., and the annual "Let Bopper visit his family in Connecticut tour" - I saw you guys in every state between CT and Virginia with Dollar, Bobby Lambert and Rich Coulter. I'll keep coming up to this site until I find out when the next live show will be - and I won't miss it. Jay, Bob, Senator: Glad to see you all keeping the music, (and the t-shirts) alive. I remember you guy's havin' that yellow school bus that the breaks were always going out on it, or something else would be broken on it, off the side of the road.. to stop the thing, whoever was riding shotgun had to leap out with a cinderblock and throw it under the rear wheels of the bus..sometimes it got crushed underneath there..sometimes it actually stopped, but, always an adrenalin spike experience to say the least..
Great times!!!

Damn, I think I'm lost. Days gone by...the Copa...on stage singing the Beer song with ya...try to keep enough beer in the bar when you guys played...we actually did make the beer vendors bring exrta beer for the times you played. One time we sold out and I had to go to the local grocery to buy more. Don't tell Va. ABC. It was funny borrowing a pallate jack to get all the beer to the car!

Arron,

I was the bass player at those gigs in H'burg and Orange. I don't remember which club was in downtown H'burg but one afternoon before sound check I sneaked into the police station a couple of blocks away and lit up a bowl of hash right there in the precinct. Just had to do it.

I learned about you guys in 1987 and loved your music. Lost the cassette over the years, but I just ordered the CD. (Just heard the clip of my favorite Roadducks song, "Laughin Eyes" for the first time in over 15 years!) Saw you at the Mystic Den and the Gandy Dancer in Harrisonburg, some place (?) in Manassas, Horsefeathers (Gordonsville?) and several other places - the shows were always great. In the late 90's or early 2000's, I hit the road for a drive to clear my head and wound up in Front Royal. The marquee on a hotel said "Acoustic Road Ducks" so I had to stop. Great acoustic show, but I was one of only about 15 in the audience - I was the guy at the bar clapping loudly after each song. Glad you still get together. I live in Florida now, but I'll have to come up and catch a show at Jaxx. Thanks for the memories.

Bob- I have been looking for you! I am now the same age as you when you first met me! You look as if you have only aged a day!My first Road Duck show was 5 years before that when I briefly met Jay and Phil.

Many things have happend in the last 22 years to the Dux and rock in the area! Thanks to Jay,the whole Duck family, many other support people behind the scenes; as well as the loyal regulars we have kept rock alive & local!
(Too bad for me Skippers(Norfolk) finnaly was closed for condos;your old drive by shooting memories)Joe do I know you?
My husband wants me to burn my jaxx & rock pictures for fear my 19 month old will see them when she is older. But I say no , I have too many memories of jaxx and special ones of being with the dux and you! ROCK ON. I WILL ALWAYS BE REDROCKER IN MY HEART.

Hey Bob and or Senator, this is a friend from a long time ago. i was at the Crossroads in Bladensburg, MD when AMERICAS MOST WANTED came in and got a guy from the bar. i also grabbed an inflatable flying-v that someone gave the Senator, and jumped on stage during "Sweet Home Alabama" (a product of partying in the band room). Good times were had by all! Anyway i was interested in getting a copy of the B**Yza song?
Till we meet again,

I stumbled across your website and had to say hello, HELLO!!!!.

I watched you folks BURN down a place in the 80's called the Kenwood Tavern in Bristol, Pa. They had an 80 year old waitress named Gwen who ran around with her thumbs up in the air yellin' "rock & roll". That place has since burned down, seriously, but your shows were the best, thanks, Pete.

January 27, 2008

Hey Guys,
Wanna know what ever happened to that guy who played bass for y'all for nearly five years in the '80s? Here I is! These days I'm playin' the resophonic guitar (AKA dobro). I play with two groups Bull Run (bluegrass - played a couple large outdoor BG festivals last summer). And recently joined a Silver Spring based band called THE DRUTHERS - you can find us at druthers.net and get links to Druthers Myspace and my own meager Myspace page for some recent pics, I'm on the "Friends" section - Rezydent. I've been in the studio quite a bit lately doing session work for several local bluegrass, and
Americana/Celtic artists - and even some jazz/fusion. Realy working hard to revamp the Druthers sound which has changed dramatically - so the myspace stuff is quite dated.
Glad to to see you guys are still Rockin! I listened to some of Get Ducked on CD Baby - sure brought back a lotta great memories. We gotta get together some time and catch up. Anyone interested in contacting me can do so via email at: varezydent@hotmail.com

Hey Jay & Phil- Ducks fan since 78. Used to see you every time you played the Back Door in Norfolk (remember Sasquatch?) Even made a trip north to Uncle Louie's for the contest one year. I remember waking up on the floor of your bus the next morning with no idea how I got there. Seems I was too tore up for the drive back to Norfolk and Jay had taken my keys and loaded my drunk ass on the bus. Thanks for looking out for me. So glad to see you guys are still doing what you love. Still have my Ducks tee shirt although I think it shrunk over the years as it doesnt fit like it used to :). Hope to see you one day at Jaxx. November 25, 2007

...I think it was the late eighty's or early ninety's that I first heard something that I couldn’t possibly Believe...to think that the legendary, and sometimes incendiary, Roadducks had finally crossed the line...and now had become some sort of Black Mass Satanic Cult that worshipped dead animal bones... in a hellish sacrifice that included drinking the blood of the beast, once it had been killed and bones scattered...this was no ordinary accusation against these Roadducks, although they had been known to cross all other boundries of erratic behavior...bordering on psycotic moral taboo, in which normal homosapiens usually do not participate. Still, they had never gone this far before...…
…..It was Saturday night and the Roadducks had just finished the last set of a great weekend stint in Nagshead, N.C.. The owner of the club had just talked to “Jay “(Manager/Agent) Nedry, and told him that he thought the Dux were the hottest thing outta’ the south since “Atlanta Pussy”..( which they knew to be untrue.), and that he would have them back anytime, at Twice the Price and Rooms on the beach!!…
….Well, about a week later...after the Dux had flown that coop for Upstate N.Y. , or some other place they all hid out back then, Jay gets a callback from the owner of the club having an absolute “Purple HissyFit with a Crochet Tail“, screaming in an uncontrollable belligerent tirade, that he would never hire “those Lowlife Scum suckin’, Devil idolizing‘, Black Mass Worshippin’, Animal Sacrificing Heathens again, even If Beelzebub himself was kickin’ his teeth out,
one by one, ‘til he hired them back“..…Whew....bad day for Dux…
….Well, as time went on (about 6 months), they had eventually figured out what must have happened that gruesome night, smoldering in that evil chamber of Death..
...It seems as tho’ The $enator was up late drinkin’ some LeM Motlow with a few pals that nite,… and when he stood up to bid them farewell...well..He fell on his face in the parking lot, and dug up quite abit of gravel with his nose. With his Richard Nixonlike proboscus bleeding like he was having major face surgery, and no bandaids to stop it, he used a towel from the bathroom to mop up the blood.
The next day, after checkout, The maids cleaned the room and found the bloody towels, a bunch of chicken bones under the bed, and a couple packs of burnt matches strewn all about the room..., so naturally, you would immediately think that there was a Satanic ritual taking place here..,and so they immediately set about telling everyone in Town about the “Black Mass Cult” that had stayed in their hotel.
….well.. It was a wonderful story but in reality though, the chicken bones were from a Kentucky fried chicken box that dumped out on the floor, and the spent matches were from some other activity that bands use them...like, maybe as a courtesy match light to cover the odor of an overzealous bowel movement by one of their roadies in the bathroom, or,...just use your imagination, because the maids sure did...…
They never got hired back there, but the story has out survived the club...Long Live Roadducks!!
Moral to the story?
“It’s a foul Duck that doesn’t cover his Tracks“...YBDYGD

...we were opening for Dicky Betts at Jaxx...i had leaped off the side of the stage, in the middle of a song, and ran my raggedy ass to the bath room to take a quick leak...cause i had to..Bad!...well, there was this guy in there sittin' in a wheel chair and lookin' at me...he says "can you help me get my pants back up? i need somebody to get behind my chair, and yank them up when i lift up on the arms of the chair O.K?....."well" i says,"let's make this fast,in case somebody comes walkin' in",...the next thing you know,...i gave em' a hell of a tug, and the man flew out of the chair and into the urinal..face/head first!!..I immediately ran out in disgust and mortification, but i have since recovered.. so,Remember: never be too nice to people in a club..at least not so anybody would notice..

What ever happened to MadDog? you know, the roadie that used to eat wine glasses and beer bottles, and he would bet the owner of the club that he could drink a glass of Motor oil, or Transmission fluid, in exchange for a case of beer for the Band. I heard he died of natural causes, which is hard to believe under the circumstances, but it must go back to the self-embalming thing these Roadducks are into.

Bosco EmptyPockets

November 16, 2007

the first day i roadied for the Roadducks, they all had a meeting with me in the hotel room and asked me how much i thought i should get paid a week. When i said "I guess about $100 a week." I looked around at everyone laughing their ass off.. and Jay says, "if we paid you $100 a week, you'd go out and buy a television set and a Cadillac, and be in the car watchin'TV and sleepin' all day and we'd never get a lick o'work otta'ya, so,you can get paid the same amount as everyone else does...5$ a day and a ham sandwich on show days." alot of times a we got paid in just BEER, which was incentive... but, all in all, it was quite a memorable experience knowin' and workin' for those guys, although I wouldn't do it again in this life. Peace.

Someone once said: "The Roadducks are similer to the staph infection you can get on your fanny that you could never get rid of ....no matter what kind of pomade, or salve that you slather on it.... just like the swallows in Capistrano, MacArthur on Corregidor, or Mexicans over the border... they keep comin' back for more"....'Cause it's the American Way....You can't keep a good Man Down... Well Now , i remember when the Roadducks first started out as a upstart skiffle group from Sqatney...the DiXie Roadducks, as they were... young dumb, and full of BEER....they had it made ...just ridin' around the country, raisin' all kind'a Holy Hell out of... and within the skirts of... Anytown USA...that seemed to go on for a long time, and i kind'a miss those days...until they got serious about one thing... the Battle of the Bands at LOUIE'S Rock City... the Prize: $7,000 and 4 shows at LOUIE'S... Well, bein' resourceful young men tryin' to get ahead in those days.... they decided to put a keg of beer on thier tour bus,(a converted yellow school bus), which was parked in the back of the club just in time for the 3 Bus loads of fans they had shipped in from Maryland, Delaware , West Virginia...and UpperKookamonga for all i know...people was comin' outta' the floorboards, cracks in the asphalt parkin' lot, even off the walls and roof of the Club itself...inside it was like "Ghamorra"... drunkin fools blowin' on flugle horns and yellin' so loud....you could barely hear the mega-phone i was hollerin' into.....and the girls were screamin like they was havin' babies...and throwin' themselves, and thier garments, at the stage.....it was a once in a life time event...and i'm not sure... but i think nobody died, or was severly injured durin' the whole affair....They won by the slimmest margine ever recorded in the historical archives for a Battle of the Bands...somebody said somebody paid somebody off... but the Old Man that owned the club never would consent to a lie detector test.... they never saw the $7000... but they did, however, perservere...this being a wonderful delight to the fans....also to thier neighbors so it turned out, in this case....they had to leave town in a pronto manner....The Bank Creditors and The Constables of Authority was A'Chasin' 'em down like they was ropin' helpless little steer calfs in the rodeo...but..the Roadducks never quit... they perservered... then things get a little cloudy after that... so I'LL have to get back with you later on that and that...
